I just wondered if it is just to feature a WinCustomize skin while there is a competition going on. I guess not too many subscribers really download a skin b/c it's featured and the main increase in downloads for the featured skins would be from random visitors but still, I just wondered what others are thinking about this...

I agree that featuring a skin is not likely to increase subscriber downloads. Subscribers tend to be here on a daily basis and they see all the WindowBlinds skins as they are posted. Random downloads don't count in the contest and they are most likely to be boosted by featuring a skin.

The same could be said for contestants who appear in the Top Authors list or the Top Downloads list. Some people appear in those lists every single day, and it could be said that it would give them an unfair advantage. I don't think it does though.

Looking at the featured skins list, several of the recent skins have been featured, and I wouldn't be surprised to see more of the skins in the competition featured  in upcoming days.  It seems to be a fairly evenly spread thing.

That also made me wonder... Is this really a competition of who submits first? How many subscribers download pretty much every skin? Is downlaods really a good indicator of skin's quality? Maybe the competition should have been "Ratings by subscribers" instead of "Number of downloads by subscribers".

I don't remember reading anything about the skins quality.

Win some cash making skins and having fun! The Fall skinning contest has begun as the top 10 skins in terms of subscriber downloads will win a portion of the revenue WinCustomize receives from subscriber downloads.

Thats what it said.

I always figured the "Featured Skin" was meant to focus on the best stuff and fortunately for us, the best is coming along right now in part due to the contest. Also, I agree with MikeB that subscribers are here pretty much every day anyway and already see everything that comes across.

Is this really a competition of who submits first?

I had the same thought in the beginning, but as time passes, I think it evens out. The number one skin right now was submitted 9 days after the first skin of the contest, and there were many others submitted in between. If you submit a skin on the last day, I'd say you're out of luck, but as long as a skin has a week or so of exposure, I think it has a fair chance of getting all the subscriber downloads that it can.

If you compare the download counts too, only about 10% of the downloads are by subscribers, the rest is from non-subscribers, so I think a skin being featured won't give it too much of an advantage.

Chances are that new people would have already downloaded the really good stuff before subscribing. Could being featured have a negative effect as far as contest downloads go? After I wake up I will probably see the stupidity in my thought.
